Decongesting Herbal Respiratory Steam

This is a good treatment before work or bed to open up the upper respiratory system.

If you have access to fresh herbs, use them as the volatile oils are more abundant. You can also combine fresh and dried herbs as needed, or use just the dried herbs if that is what is available to you.

Ingredients

1½ ounces lemon peel

1 ounce thyme leaf

½ ounce rosemary leaf

½ ounce peppermint leaf

Supplies:

Glass jar (to store herbs)

Stove

Stockpot with lid

Bath towel

Tissue

Instructions

  1. Combine herbs and store in a glass jar.

  2. When needed, bring 8 to 12 cups of water to a boil in a large stockpot.

  3. Turn off the heat and add 1-2 handfuls of the herbal blend.

  4. Close the lid and let steep for 5 minutes.

  5. Take the lid off to allow the steam to roll off a bit to ensure you don't burn your face.

  6. Get a bath towel and cover your head and shoulders. Close your eyes, putting your face over the steaming pot.

  7. Breathe in the steam for a minute. Take a break. Repeat 3 times.

  8. Remove any loose phlegm with tissue.

You may use the same batch multiple times to steam, but keep in mind that as you leave the plants steaming, the aromatics will continue to escape and become less effective.

When the smell starts to fade, or after 1-2 days, start a new batch.

Caution: Discontinue use if this is not comfortable or if it does not feel safe for you.
